Machu Picchu is one of those rare gems where even the hype does not do justice to its grandeur when experienced in person.

The view upon entering is absolutely jaw-dropping and the surrounding terrain is vast and vertical and the site is more precipitously perched than photographs can convey. And, for me, the most impressive aspect was the exquisite precision and artistry of the stonework.

By the way, you can get some sense of the scale by realizing that the “hill” in the background rises 800 feet above the site!
