… the Communist military junta that came to power after the deposition of Emperor Haile Selassie in 1974.
Led by Mengistu Hel Mariam, and backed by the Soviets, the Derg ruled Ethiopia until 1987, and were responsible for the torture and execution of tens, if not hundreds of thousands, of university students, intellectuals, political opponents, and innocent citizens.
