[London]Derry: 1916 Easter Rising Centennial

In 2016 I had the privilege of being in [London]Derry for a moving and thought-provoking program of reenactments to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising…

The Easter Rising was an armed insurrection lead by Irish Republicans in April 1916 with the aim of establishing an Irish Republic independent of British colonial rule.

It noteworthy that Northern Ireland (Ulster County) remains part of the United Kingdom to this day. Fortunately, this day, all remained peaceful.

Reading of the Proclamation
Mock execution of the insurrectionists. Freedom fighters or terrorists?
What is this innocent little girl thinking about? What will her elders teach her about history, ethnicity, religion, patriotism, nationalism, and peace-making?

  1. My maternal grandparents were as Irish as they come,
So I had to visit Ireland to see where I come from….
And so I did, and it seemed like I was home at last,
And now I have two homes: the present and the past.

    1. Thanks so much for checking in and for sharing that. May I ask where you hail from?
I have no Irish ancestry, yet feel right at home there… so much so that I’ve been back a dozen times and been blessed with dozens of priceless memories. Sláinte mhaith!
