Peru: Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is one of those rare gems where the hype (and my photographs) do no justice to the experience of being there…

Let’s go!

Upon arrival, the visual impact is absolutely jaw dropping.
The site is also far more precipitously perched than photographs can convey.
The most impressive aspect was the variety, precision, and artistry of the stonework.
Impressive patchwork
The famous, enormous, exquisitely hewn 32-sided block
Partial collapse, a growing concern caused by settling
You can get some sense of the scale by realizing that the “hill” in the background rises 800 feet above the site!
Model of the Southern Cross
Like an enormous three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle
