But the next morning, my trip to Croatia would begin to take a more serious turn. While waiting for the bus from Plitvice to Zadar, I noticed something in the woods nearby… my very first glimpse of the war that, up until now, I had only known vaguely from a distance.
This is the very well-tended memorial to Josip Jović, a young Croatian policeman killed by Serbian forces and considered to be the very first victim of the Croatian War of Independence. This sobering reminder is enough about the war for now. We will learn lots more as our journey continues to Dubrovnik and on to Bosnia. Peace.
